Every entry here answers why we chose it rather than what it is. You can look up what PostgreSQL does; you cannot look up why we run it instead of whatever a host handed us.

Almost everything above is ours to operate, because a dependency we cannot fix is a promise we cannot make. Payments are the exception, and deliberately so: card data is a liability rather than an asset, and there is no version of holding it ourselves that serves a customer better.
