The buyer .online actually suits
The honest case for .online is not that it is modern. It is that the word completes a sentence. A descriptive brand followed by .online tells a visitor what the address is for, which is why it does well for shops, marketplaces and services whose whole proposition is being reachable without a branch or a shop front. If your first choice is a dictionary word, this is one of the few extensions where the second choice does not read as a compromise.
It suits a second audience too, and this one is less discussed. Because Radix has registered ten IDN tables for the extension, a business trading in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Cyrillic or a CJK script can register the label it actually uses in market rather than a transliteration. Radix publishes over 3.5 million .online domains under management, and the extension is distributed through most large registrars, so the name you buy sits in a market that is liquid if you ever sell it.
Registry, ownership and the pricing structure behind it
IANA names the sponsoring organisation as Radix Technologies Inc. SEZC in the Cayman Islands. That has moved twice: the extension was delegated to DotOnline Inc. in March 2015, transferred to Radix FZC in August 2021 and to the present entity in February 2024. Technical operations sit with Tucows, whose nameservers serve the zone. None of this changes anything for a registrant, but it does explain why older reference pages name a registry that no longer exists.
What does affect you is Radix's premium structure. Its policies reserve names and put them into price categories with custom registration and renewal fees set at the registry's discretion, and the base registry agreement permits that non-uniform renewal pricing where it was disclosed at registration. This is exactly the case where a first-year headline price hides a permanent renewal, so we show registration, renewal, transfer and restore together for the exact name you searched. As an Openprovider reseller we pass the registry's categories through; we do not set them.
