Zurich public authorities and Zurich-registered legal entities only

Registry: The Canton of Zurich (Kanton Zuerich), Office for Economy and Labour, as registry operator; technical operations by CentralNic.

Category 1: a Zurich public authority, including the Canton and the City of Zurich and related entities. Category 2: a legal entity holding a commercial registration number (UID) with a registration in the Commercial Register of the Canton of Zurich.
You must supply a valid physical address inside the Canton of Zurich, a working telephone number and a named reference person. The UID is passed to the registry as a required extra data field with the registration, so it is checked against the order, not taken on trust.
Privacy and proxy registration services are not permitted, and materially false registrant details are a policy breach. A .zuerich holder is publicly identifiable by design.
There is no trustee service and no route in for private individuals, sole proprietorships outside the commercial register, or companies registered in another canton. A Zurich office with the entity registered in Zug does not qualify.

Why a Swiss business would hold one

Switzerland gives you three quite different Swiss signals and they are not interchangeable. .ch is open to anyone anywhere and says nothing about the holder. .swiss is federally administered and says the holder has a demonstrable connection to Switzerland. .zuerich is narrower than both and says something neither can: this entity is on the commercial register of the Canton of Zurich, with an address in the canton, and the Canton itself allocated the name.

That narrowness is the argument. For a business whose market is the canton rather than the country, the extension does work in the address bar that a tagline would otherwise have to do, and the eligibility gate means it cannot be diluted by registrants with no local footprint. It is a complement, though, not a replacement. Customers reach for .ch by reflex, so the sensible pattern is to hold the .ch as the address people guess and put the .zuerich on the vehicle, the shopfront and the letterhead where the geographic claim is the point.

The Canton's policy is stricter than a typical registry's

The governing document is the Canton's Domain Name Registration and Use Policy, Policy No. 1, in its 6 February 2021 version. It sets a restricted registration model with both registrant and local-presence requirements, and it is unusually explicit about what happens afterwards: compliance must be maintained for the whole duration of the registration, names may not be licensed or made available to third parties who would not themselves qualify, and privacy or proxy services are prohibited outright.

The Canton also reserves the right to monitor use routinely and to investigate on its own initiative or on complaint, and to deny, cancel, transfer or lock a name where it finds a breach of the registration and use policy or the anti-abuse policy. Acceptable-use limits go beyond the usual abuse categories to include names or content that mislead about geographic origin or official status. As a reseller we submit the registration with your UID and cantonal address, manage renewals and the technical configuration, and tell you before you pay if we think an application will not clear.

What holding a .zuerich actually commits you to

Term: One to ten years under the Canton's policy, renewed thereafter in one-year periods. We hold the renewal on your normal billing cycle.
Registrant data required: Beyond the usual contact set, the registration carries the Canton of Zurich UID and an acceptance flag for the Canton's policy. Get the UID wrong and the registration fails at the registry rather than quietly succeeding.
If you miss the renewal: The registry backend publishes a 35-day grace period after expiry during which a restore is still possible, followed by a 30-day redemption period and then 5 days of pending delete before the name is released. The restore price shown above is far higher than a renewal.
Transfer: Transfers use an auth code from your current registrar and the name must not carry a transfer prohibition. As an ICANN-contracted gTLD, .zuerich takes the standard 60-day lock after registration and after a previous transfer. A transfer does not alter eligibility: the new holder must still qualify.
Names and umlauts: The extension itself is the ASCII spelling zuerich, but second-level labels may contain a, o and u umlauts, so the name in front of the dot can be spelled properly in German. Labels run to 63 characters, DNSSEC is supported, and disputes fall under the UDRP, URS and Trademark PDDRP.

Zurich-registered companies with a local market
If your customers are in the canton — trades, professional practices, hospitality, retail, local services — the extension states the catchment area in the address itself. That is worth more to a local business than a generic gTLD.
Not a substitute for .ch
Nobody guesses a .zuerich address. It is a signal to hold alongside the .ch that people type from memory, not instead of it, and it is useless to anyone outside the eligibility categories.

Frequently asked questions

Can a private individual register a .zuerich domain?

No. The Canton's policy limits eligibility to Zurich public authorities and to legal entities holding a UID with a registration in the Commercial Register of the Canton of Zurich. Private individuals and sole proprietorships that are not on that register cannot hold one, and no trustee service fills the gap.

My company is registered in another canton but has a Zurich office. Do I qualify?

Not as the policy stands. The requirement is a registration in the Commercial Register of the Canton of Zurich, together with a valid physical address in the canton, a telephone number and a named reference person. An office alone is not the same as a cantonal commercial register entry.

Can I keep my details out of WHOIS?

No. The policy expressly prohibits the use of privacy or proxy registration services for .zuerich names and requires accurate, complete registrant information. If public identifiability is a problem for you, this is the wrong extension.

What happens if I miss a renewal?
