Twenty years across cloud infrastructure, enterprise networking, security and automation - on-premises datacentre networks, service-provider environments and large-scale Azure platforms alike. His design work runs from ExpressRoute, VPN Gateway and hub-and-spoke topologies through Private Link, DNS and Azure Firewall, and he automates what he designs with Terraform and CI/CD rather than leaving it to a runbook. Most recently he has been leading cloud connectivity engineering and enterprise AI enablement.

Network Engineer

Builds secure, sovereign, scalable and stable technology stacks for small and medium organisations - his words, and a fair description of how he approaches a network. Network and systems architecture on Juniper, Proxmox VE and VyOS, with a consistent bias toward owning the stack: his consulting record is full of engagements where self-hosted infrastructure replaced a spreading SaaS bill. He also runs vlan1337.com, a reference desk for technology managers - CVE and CERT tracking, IETF RFC search, ASN and geolocation lookup. The habit that produces a site like that is the one that reads an advisory before it becomes an incident.

Twenty years of building, scaling and fixing digital products, most of it through Brandise, the studio he founded in 2013. He has led product design inside commerce at scale - repeated engagements as lead product designer at Zalando - and between contracts he builds his own products rather than decks, which is why his design direction tends to survive contact with implementation. Outcome-focused by his own description: the design is judged by what it changes.

AWS-certified out of an IBM cloud practice, so his architecture arguments come with both hyperscalers in scope. He is the second architect on this list by design: cloud decisions here get reviewed by someone who did not make them.

The only person here who has committed to the software every one of our platforms boots on: he has contributed upstream to systemd, modernising its unit tests, and to NixOS package infrastructure. Day to day it is DevOps - Python, Bash, containerised workloads, pipelines - but the reason to have him is the layer most teams treat as someone else's problem. He came up through AltSchool Africa's cloud engineering programme.
